Depart from home and begin our journey to Milan, Italy.

Arrival in Italy

The group arrives and is greeted by our local tour manager, David Kershaw, who will help us transfer from the airport to Bed & Breakfast Milano Sant Ambrogio. 

The earlier in the day that guests arrive, the more time they will have free to explore Milan on their own, and participate in personal bucket-list items.

Later is our welcome dinner at a local restaurant near the hotel. Expect to enjoy basic introductions and review some basic tour information as well.

Overnight in Milan.

This day we tour the Milan Duomo, as well as see some of the city’s main sights. Including sights such as Sforza Castle, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and Teatro alla Scala. Also today, we visit the Santa Maria Dela Grazi. Consequently, we will view Milan’s most famous mural: The Last Supper, by Leonardo Da Vinici. The afternoon following these sites, is free for guests to explore and shop on their own.

Milan Duomo: 

This cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete, and is the largest church in Italy. Visitors admire its stunning interior, which features intricate stained glass windows and impressive vaulted ceilings. Climbing to the rooftop offers panoramic views of Milan and the surrounding area.

Sforza Castle: 

This historic fortress is located in the heart of Milan, Italy. Originally built in the 15th century by the Duke of Milan, Francesco Sforza, it served as a symbol of power and a residence for the ruling Sforza family. Today, it houses several museums and art collections, making it a significant cultural and historical tie of the city. Guests can explore its courtyards, admire its imposing architecture, and view a vast array of art, including works by Michelangelo. 

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: 

This grand shopping arcade was named after King Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of a united Italy. This historic and ornate mall was designed in the 19th century and is famous for its stunning glass-domed roof, intricate mosaics, and elegant architecture. It’s home to high-end boutiques, restaurants, cafes and is a popular gathering place. The Galleria is often considered one of the world’s oldest shopping malls. 

Teatro alla Scala: 

One of the world’s most renowned and historic opera houses, it was inaugurated in 1778. Since then it has become an iconic venue for opera and classical music performances. La Scala is known for its exceptional acoustics, opulent interior, and a long list of famous composers and artist who have graced its stage. 

We will overnight in Milan for a second night.

Today the group transfers to Venice. En route we will stop at the beautiful Lake Garda for an extended lunch break. Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, and is a popular vacation destination amongst local Italians. Here, guests can relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery, as well as get to know others in the group. 

As the group arrives in Venice, we take a private boat across the many waters tracing the city, to our hotel.

Our morning is spent as a group on a guided tour of the main sites of Venice. Together, we view Piazza San Marco and the Bridge of Sighs. Additionally, we gain entrance into Saint Marks Basilica, as well as entrance to the Doge’s Palace. Following our group tour of these wonderful Venice sites, there is time to explore Venice freely. This would be a good time to catch a gondola ride with loved ones or friends, as well as enjoy the other sites that Venice has to offer.

Saint Mark’s Basilica: 

This is a magnificent cathedral known for its stunning Byzantine architecture. Often it is referred to as the “Church of Gold.” Receiving this name due to its lavish interior adorned with mosaics and precious materials. The basilica has served as a symbol of Venetian wealth as well as power for centuries. Therefore it is also  a significant religious and cultural landmark in Italy.

Doge’s Palace: 

This historic palace in Italy is adjacent to Saint Mark’s Basilica. Serving as the residence of the Doge, the highest authority in the Venetian Republic. This is a stunning example of Venetian Gothic architecture. Featuring a combination of pink and white marble, intricate detailing, and a series of arched loggias. Similarly, the palace has housed various government offices and was a symbol of the Republic’s political and judicial power. Today, it is a museum that offers a glimpse into Venice’s rich history and opulent artistry.

Bridge of Sighs: 

This famous enclosed bridge, made of white limestone, passes over the Rio di Palazzo in Italy. This bridge connects the Doge’s Palace to the New Prison. Originally, “Bridge of Sighs” comes from the idea that prisoners would sigh at their final view of Venice through the bridge’s windows before being imprisoned. Stemming, rightfully, as they believed they might not see the city again. It is an iconic and romanticized symbol of Venice’s history.

From Venice, the group takes another private boat to transfer to Trochetto. From Tronchetto, the group makes its way to Ravenna, a medieval city 100 miles away. Upon arrival in Ravenna, the group tours together the main sites of the city. Entrance to the Neonian Bapitstry, as well as the Basilica San Vitale are included.

Ravenna

Religiously, Ravenna played a pivotal role in the spread of Christianity in Italy and Europe. As the seat of Byzantine power in Italy, it became a center for Christian art and theology during the early medieval period. The city’s churches served as important religious and political institutions, fostering the development of Christian doctrine and spirituality. 

Neonian Baptistry

The interior of this baptistry is adorned with intricate mosaics that depict scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, including his baptism. These mosaics are renowned for their vibrant colors and detailed craftsmanship. The baptistry’s octagonal shape is symbolic of Christian belief in the resurrection and eternal life.

Basilica San Vitale

This city holds immense cultural and religious significance. Historically, it was the capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, and later became the capital of the Byzantine Empire in Italy. Ravenna is renowned for its exceptional Byzantine mosaics, which adorn its churches and monuments, such as the Basilica of San Vitale. These mosaics are UNESCO World Heritage sites, depicting scenes from both the Old and New Testaments from floor to ceiling.

We leave behind Ravenna today, in order to continue exploring Italy. Today we make transfers to the central city of Florence. Here, we have the opportunity to see the main sites of the city, including: Ponte Vecchio and Palazzo Vecchio, as well as entrance to Santa Croce.

Ponte Vecchio: 

This famous and historic bridge in Italy is known for its distinctive design and rows of shops that it houses. The bridge spans the Arno River and is noted for its beautiful views of the river and the city. The Ponte Viccio has a rich history and is a survivor of various floods and wars, making it one of the most iconic and enduring symbols of Florence. 

Palazzo Vecchio: 

Also known as the “Old Palace,” this prominent building in Italy is located in the heart of Florence. It is one of the most significant symbols of the city’s civic and political history. The Palazzo Veccio has served various functions over the centuries, including as the seat of government during the rule of the Medici family, and as the town hall of Florence.

Santa Croce: 

Inside this striking Gothic church you can find an array of impressive artwork, including frescoes and sculptures. As well as the tombs of many prominent figures from Italian history, such as Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, and Niccolo Machiavelli.

In the morning the group has a half day guided walking tour of Florence. Seeing the Santa Croce, as well as visit The Academia. In the afternoon the group has free time to explore Florence, shop or visit the Ufizzi Gallery (entrance requires a separate ticket).

The Accademia: 

This art gallery is famous for being the home of Michelangelo’s statue of David. In addition to David, the museum also houses other significant works of art. Including Michelangelo’s unfinished sculptures, as well as an impressive collection of Renaissance paintings and musical instruments. 

Florence Duomo: 

This cathedral is one of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks in the city of Florence. Known for its remarkable dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, an architectural marvel of its time. Inside, visitors admire impressive artworks and sculptures, including Giotto’s Campanile and the Baptistry of St. John.

From Florence we take a short transfer to visit the Tuscany region of Pisa. Here, we visit iconic sites, such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In addition, the group visits sites in the Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles). These religious sites give us insights into the early Christian church, as well as cultural significance in Italy. Finally, we visit the Duomo of Pisa before transferring back to Florence where we will overnight.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

Or rather, the Tower of Pisa, is a freestanding bell tower that gained worldwide fame due to its noticeable tilt caused by an unstable foundation. Despite its unintended tilt, the tower has become a symbol of architectural ingenuity and attracts millions of tourists a year.

Baptistry of Pisa (St. John)

Arguably one of the most religiously significant monuments in Pisa, this baptistry is located in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Constructed over several centuries, the Pisa Baptistry exhibits a blend of architectural styles, including Romanesque and Gothic elements. The baptismal font is particularly noteworthy for its octagonal shape and exquisite craftsmanship. The space is known for its acoustics, which create a unique auditory experience for visitors. Additionally, the echo is impressive, adding to the atmosphere during religious ceremonies and musical performances.

Duomo of Pisa: Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

Also located in the Piazza dei Miracoli, this grand cathedral began its construction in 1063 and continued over several centuries. A notable feature of the Duomo is its pulpit, sculpted by Giovanni Pisano in the 14th century. The pulpit is renowned for its intricate carvings and sculptural details, depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Four Evangelists.

Today we leave Florence behind and begin our transfers to Siena and Assisi. First stopping in Siena, the group has free time to explore this medieval town. Later, in Assisi, the group is guided through the main sites, including the Basilica of San Francis.

Siena: 

Known for its medieval architecture, rich cultural heritage, and famous Palio: a horse race held in the city’s main square twice a year. 

Attractions include:

      — Piazza del Camp: shell shaped square is the heart of Siena, surrounded by buildings, cafes and the impressive Palazzo Pubblico. 

      —  Palazzo Pubblico: medieval palace is home to the Civic Museum where you can see the famous frescoes.

      — Siena’s cuisine: offers delicious Tuscan cuisine, including pici pasta and panforte, a traditional desert. 

Assisi

A charming hilltop town, Assisi is located in the Umbria region of Italy. Renowned for its stunning medieval architecture, rich history, and spiritual significance. Assisi is best known for being the birthplace of Saint Francis of Assisi, one of Italy’s patron saints. Consequently, the most iconic landmark in this town is the Basilica of San Francis. Additionally, the Rocca Maggiore, and Basilica of Santa Chiara are notable sites of Assisi.

Basilica of San Francis

This basilica complex consists of two churches, the Upper Basilica and the Lower Basilica, both adorned with exquisite frescoes by renowned artists such as Giotto and Cimabue. Among these frescoes are the portrayals of the life of Saint Francis.

The morning starts with transfers from Assisi to Rome. Today we have the opportunity to visit and explore the sites of Ancient Rome. Our guide will lead us through each significant site of this ancient complex, including the Colosseum and Roman Forum. Later, the group has entrance to the Mamertine Prison, the traditional site of the imprisonment of apostles Peter and Paul.

Colosseum: 

Constructed in 70-80 AD and can accommodate up to 80,000 spectators, making it the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire. It was primarily used for gladiatorial contests and various public spectacles, including animal hunts, mock sea battles and executions. Over the centuries, the Colosseum has suffered from natural disasters and human activity. However it is undergoing extensive restoration efforts to preserve its structural integrity. 

Roman Forum: 

This vast archaeological site is located in the center of Rome, Italy. It was the center of ancient Rome and served as a bustling public space for political, religious and commercial activities. Within the Forum you can find a range of well-preserved ruins and structures, including the Temple of Saturn, the Arch of Septimus Severus, the Basilica of Mexentius and the Curia, which served as the Senate House.

This morning the group has a half-day guided tour of the Vatican. We will visit the Vatican Museums which include the Sistine Chapel, visit the St. Peters Basilica and see the St. Peter’s square.

Sistine Chapel: 

Famous for its exquisite art, particularly the stunning frescoes on its ceiling and altar wall, painted by the great Michelangelo. This chapel is the site where papal conclaves are held to elect a new pope. Also it is a place for important religious ceremonies and gatherings. To preserve the artwork, strict rules are enforced in the chapel, including no photography and speaking in a hushed tone.

St. Peter’s Basilica: 

Considered to be the holiest Catholic site and the burial place of Saint Peter. Guests can climb to the top of the dome for breathtaking panoramic views of the Vatican City and Rome. Inside, the basilica houses numerous artistic treasures, including Michelangelo’s “Pieta” and Bernini’s “Cathedra Petri.”

St. Peter’s Square: 

Just outside of St. Peter’s Basilica, this square serves purpose to major papal ceremonies and events. The Pope often delivers blessings and addresses the crowd from the balcony of the Apostolic Palace overlooking the square. In the center of the square stands an ancient Egyptian obelisk brought to Rome by Emperor Caligula in 37 AD. It was placed in the square in 1586.

Finally, the tour concludes with a guided tour of Rome, Italy. This ancient city holds ties back to BC, and once was the capital of the Roman Empire. Impressively, Christianity helped to shape the architecture and culture of the city as it appears today. Visits today include the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, and Trevi Fountain. 

As an additional bonus, our group has the unique opportunity to attend the Rome Italy LDS Temple. Here, patrons have the chance to participate in an endowment for those who would like to. We arrange for the session with the Temple, so there is no need for individual reservations.

Spanish Steps:

This famous staircase in Italy is 135 steps. Located in the Piazza di Spagna, it is one of the most iconic and visited landmarks in the city.

Trevi Fountain: 

One of the most famous and stunning fountains in the world. It is renowned for its grand Baroque design. A popular tradition involves throwing a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain, which is believed to ensure your return to Rome. Throwing a second coin can bring love and relationships, and a third coin can bring marriage. 

Pantheon: 

A remarkable ancient Roman temple, the Pantheon is located in the heart of Rome. This architectural masterpiece is renowned for its well-preserved dome, which remains the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world. The Pantheon was originally built in 27 BC by Marcus Agrippa as a temple dedicated to all Roman gods. The current structure, with its iconic dome, was built during the reign of Emperor Hadrian around 126 AD. It is one of the best preserved ancient Roman buildings and has been in use for nearly two millennia. It currently serves as a Catholic church.
